Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and sought his intervention for granting 10-day parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara on humanitarian grounds so that he can meet his ailing mother.
Mann said Hawara has been in jail for 31 years and that his elderly mother, who is suffering from age-related health problems and is currently semi-conscious, has a renewed hope of meeting her son.
“I have requested the Governor to kindly consider granting 10 days’ parole to Jagtar Singh Hawara at the earliest so that he can meet his mother,” Mann said, stressing that the matter should be considered on humanitarian grounds in view of her deteriorating health.
The Chief Minister said the case is being heard in Delhi and, therefore, the Governor’s recommendation is required before a decision can be taken by the Centre.
“Being the Administrator of Chandigarh, the recommendation of the Governor is necessary for a decision in this regard,” Mann said, adding that he had urged Kataria to take up the matter with the Centre at the earliest.
Mann also assured the Governor that the Punjab Government would take full responsibility for maintaining law and order if Hawara is granted parole.
He said Hawara’s supporters and family members had also assured the state government of their full cooperation in maintaining peace during his visit home.
“The state government is fully committed to maintaining law and order and protecting the hard-earned peace of Punjab,” the Chief Minister said.
Mann added that the Punjab Government had earlier recommended to the Governor that Hawara be granted parole and would extend full cooperation in pursuing the matter with the Centre.
On the duration of parole, Mann said the Centre would take the final decision, while reiterating his request for a 10-day parole on humanitarian grounds.
