Senior Congress leader and Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari today gave the notice urging the Speaker that he may be allowed to raise the issue of delay in holding the Panjab University Senate elections in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour today.
Tewari said, the Senate elections at Panjab University, mandated under the Panjab University Act, 1947, remain delayed despite the previous Senate’s tenure ending on October 31, 2024.
“This has stalled governance and raised concerns about the university’s autonomy”, he said, adding, “protests by students and senators highlight fears of centralization and loss of democratic ethos”.
Despite multiple submissions to the Chancellor, the election schedule remains unapproved”, Tewari noted, while emphasising the need for immediate action to expedite the elections and ensure effective coordination between the Union and Punjab governments to uphold the university’s democratic framework.
