Captain Amarinder Singh Condemns Attack on Sukhbir Badal, Calls for Thorough Probe

Chandigarh, August 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal in Nanded, Maharashtra, and called for a thorough investigation, saying violence has no place in a civilised society.

In a post on social media platform X, Amarinder Singh said he was relieved that Badal was safe and stressed that such incidents were particularly condemnable when they occurred at a sacred religious site.

“I strongly condemn the attack on @officeofssbadal today. Violence has no place in a civilised society, and such acts are especially condemnable when they take place at a sacred religious site. I am relieved that Sukhbir is safe,” he said.

He urged the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.

“Punjab must never be allowed to return to an era of violence and hatred,” the former Chief Minister said.

Badal sustained a cut on his hand after he was allegedly attacked with a sharp-edged weapon near Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji in Nanded on Thursday. He was subsequently admitted to a private hospital, where doctors said he was out of danger.

Nanded Collector Rahul Kardile said the wound on Badal’s hand was approximately 4-5 cm long.

Badal had arrived in Nanded on Wednesday night and visited the gurdwara with his family on Thursday. The attack took place shortly after his visit to the Mata Sahib Gurdwara.

Maharashtra Police detained the alleged assailant, identified as Jaspal Singh, who was reportedly dressed in Nihang attire. State authorities ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The attack has prompted demands for a detailed investigation, particularly because it took place at a religious site. Senior SAD leaders have described the incident as a calculated conspiracy and a major security lapse, with some seeking a high-level or court-monitored probe, including a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry.

The incident has also drawn condemnation from political leaders across party lines, with calls for law enforcement agencies to establish the circumstances behind the assault and determine whether any attempt was made to disturb communal harmony.

The Nanded incident comes months after Badal survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar in December 2024 while performing religious penance.
