The Ludhiana Chapter of Indian Society of Agronomy (ISA) organized an invited talk by Professor Bhagirath Singh Chauhan from The University of Queensland, Australia. In appreciation of his outstanding contributions to weed science, Professor Chauhan was invited to deliver a talk on “Weed biology: An important science to develop effective weed management strategies” in the Department of Agronomy.
He has a wide experience in weed biology, weed seed ecology, non-chemical weed management options, herbicide use, management of herbicide-resistant weeds, and integrated weed management systems using agronomic and crop improvement components.
Professor Chauhan provided an in-depth exploration of the biological aspects of weeds and how this knowledge was essential for developing effective weed management approaches. He emphasized on the importance of studying the reproductive mechanisms, growth patterns, and ecological interactions of weeds to create targeted strategies for controlling their spread.
He also discussed how weeds adapted to different environments and their ability to evolve resistance to herbicides, stressing the need for integrated weed management. Through his expert insights, Prof Chauhan highlighted the importance of weed biology for addressing the challenges faced by modern agriculture and ensuring sustainable weed management.
The talk was succeeded by an interactive session in which Prof Chauhan responded to the queries about practical challenges in weed management, especially in the context of climate change and sustainable agricultural practices.
The President of ISA Chapter and the Head, Department of Agronomy, Dr Hari Ram introduced the speaker and welcomed the PG students and agronomy faculty. Later, he said that the event led to enhanced understanding of the complexities of weed biology and the importance of adopting innovative management strategies.
Earlier, the session commenced with a warm welcome by Dr Sandeep Singh Sandhu, Secretary, Ludhiana Chapter of ISA.
Dr Ajmer Singh Brar, Vice President, Ludhiana Chapter of ISA, while proposing a vote of thanks, acknowledged the Oz-based scientist Dr Chauhan for his informative and engaging talk.
