Gurjeet Singh Aujla has expressed serious concern over the rising incidents of drug and arms smuggling through drones in Punjab. In this regard, he has written a letter to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the strengthening of security arrangements in the border areas of Punjab, including Amritsar.
He said that since the Home Minister is in Punjab today, he should give the people of the state the gift of stronger security measures.Aujla stated that along the Punjab border, particularly in the Attari sector, there has been a continuous increase in cases of smuggling of drugs, weapons and ammunition through drones in recent times.
He mentioned that this issue has been raised several times earlier, but the ground situation still remains alarming and requires immediate and concrete action. The MP further said that several such incidents are being reported within the 50-kilometre BSF deployment belt, which is affecting the law and order situation.
The easy availability of illegal weapons through drones has led to an increase in incidents such as kidnappings, extortion, gang activities, murders and bomb threats in the state. He also pointed out that the newly installed barbed-wire fencing at certain locations along the border has created difficulties for local residents.
In this regard, he suggested that the fencing at some places should be reviewed after consultations with local stakeholders and security agencies.Aujla added that the border regions of Punjab have faced challenges related to terrorism and narcotics for more than four decades.
Amritsar, the spiritual capital of Sikhism and home to the revered Golden Temple, has historically remained at the frontline of national security challenges. In conclusion, the MP appealed to the central government to strengthen border surveillance, deploy advanced anti-drone systems and ensure better coordination among all security agencies to safeguard Punjab and the nation.
