Amritsar, Jan 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
A meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) was held today at the Bachat Bhawan in Amritsar, chaired by MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla. During the meeting, there was a heated discussion with officials on every major and minor issue related to the district’s development works, law and order, and public amenities.
MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla urged DC Dalwinder Jeet Singh to impose a section of the law that would allow for cases to be registered against those who stage protests on Airport Road, as these frequent protests cause people to miss their flights. He said that if people have complaints against the police and the police are not taking action, then a case should be registered against that officer, but staging a protest is not the solution to anything.
During the meeting, MP Aujla asked that letters be written to the government regarding several issues. He first expressed concern over the law and order situation, stating that while the police’s work is commendable, Amritsar is a border district, and therefore, additional police force is needed to maintain law and order.
He said that ransom calls, robbers targeting cars in broad daylight, drug trafficking, and shootings are now serious concerns. He therefore suggested that a letter be written to the government demanding more force to combat these criminals. Education and Teachers: “Open new colleges, but also maintain the old infrastructure”
The MP, questioning the recent inauguration of a degree college in Ajnala, said that merely cutting ribbons would not suffice. He stated that the government college and ITI (Industrial Training Institute) in Ajnala are in a dilapidated condition.
Instead of constructing new buildings, the existing infrastructure should be strengthened and new courses should be introduced. Since the new college will take several years to be built, the existing colleges should be improved for the benefit of the students currently studying there.
He also issued strict instructions regarding the severe shortage of teachers in schools, noting that many teachers are still engaged in election duty; they should be immediately relieved and sent back to their schools.
Infrastructure and Traffic Solutions
The MP issued several stern directives regarding the city’s traffic and drainage:
A proposal was made to convert the closed canal near Meera Kot into a road to alleviate traffic congestion. Panchayats were also instructed to issue notices to remove encroachments from public spaces.
MP Aujla directed the removal of unnecessary barriers on Loharka Road and the construction of dividers to resolve traffic jams. He also urged the public to take some responsibility for ensuring smooth traffic flow.
During the meeting, a complaint was raised by the revenue department that they have to go on strike almost every month to receive their salaries. Responding to this, MP Aujla instructed an investigation into why the same company is being awarded the contract repeatedly.
The MP raised serious questions about the functioning of the ‘Fard Kendras’ (land record centers). He stated that the same company has been repeatedly awarded the contract since 2007. He demanded a high-level inquiry into how this company has maintained a monopoly and why the employees there go on strike every month.
In addition, health, electricity, and other issues were discussed in detail. MP Aujla directed that a letter be written to the government regarding the improvement of facilities at Sri Guru Nanak Dev Hospital and other centers.
Concerns were raised about the government’s functioning regarding the problems at power stations and delays in land acquisition. Discussions were held.
Discussions were held regarding providing full payment for 125 days to the panchayats and regarding MGNREGA proposals.
MP Aujla informed that the work of waste management and segregation in the city is being monitored by the Deputy Commissioner.
In addition, MP Aujla discussed the performance of each department in detail.
He said that he is in contact with the central government to provide relief to the people and to bring in funds for new projects, but first, the state government needs to prepare and submit the project proposals.
He also commented on the incomplete cleaning of the Tung Dhab drain, saying that if a complete project is prepared and submitted for its cleaning, he will bring in the funds and the work will be done. However, the current government only got half the work done, which was of no use.
Regarding the cases being filed against various journalists by the government, MP Aujla said that the government is spreading anarchy. He said that only the opposition and the media can keep the government in check and hold it accountable by asking questions, and the government should answer them instead of taking action against them.
Regarding the deteriorating law and order situation, he said that education is very important. Most children study in government schools, and if proper education is provided in government schools, they will become good citizens and get employment.
He opposed the ‘no detention’ rule up to class 8, saying that tests are necessary in every class so that the standard of government schools can be at par with private schools and children remain motivated to study.
