Amritsar MP Aujla demands reduction of MEP on Basmati

Amritsar, August 9, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla today demanded reduction of MEP on Basmati rice to give relief to traders. He said in Parliament that India has more MEP than Pakistan which is affecting the export.

MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla today demanded reduction of minimum export price on export of Basmati rice during Sandhya Rai’s chair in Lok Sabha. He raised his voice and said that Basmati is cultivated a lot in the region.

Last time, the government had put a cap of $ 1200 per ton on export of Basmati, after which there was protest and it was reduced to $ 950 per ton. At present, the same rate is prevailing but this rate is also very high. He said that 1509, 1121, 1718 Basmati varieties are grown here. Basmati is cultivated all over the world in India and Pakistan.

He said that due to high rates, Indian farmers are not getting orders for 1509 Basmati whereas the rate in Pakistan is 700 dollars. Due to which Pakistan is getting all the orders. He said that on one hand the government says that the income of farmers has to be doubled but on the other hand the rates have been increased.

The crops are ready for harvesting but orders are not being received. He demanded that the export rate of 1509 Basmati should be less than Pakistan’s 700 dollars so that the farmers and traders of our country can take benefit.
