Mohali, July 6, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days in connection with an ongoing disproportionate assets case, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The decision was handed down by a Mohali court, which ordered Majithia to be lodged at Nabha Jail. The case is scheduled to come up for its next hearing on July 19.
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau, which arrested Majithia from his Green Avenue residence in Amritsar on June 25, had previously secured an initial 7-day custody, followed by an extension of 4 more days. However, during Sunday’s hearing, the agency chose not to seek additional remand, instead allowing judicial custody to commence.
Majithia was brought to court under tight security arrangements. Supporters from the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), led by YAD President Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer, attempted to approach the court premises but were detained by Mohali Police before they could reach the site.
Addressing the media outside the court, Arshdeep Singh Kaler, a legal counsel and senior Akali leader, criticized the handling of the case. “The Vigilance Bureau has no solid evidence, and this appears to be a trial by media rather than based on legal merit,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a representative from the Vigilance Bureau noted that under the revised legal provisions, the agency can seek an additional 3-day remand even after judicial custody is granted, provided a fresh request is submitted to the court.
Majithia’s arrest and ongoing judicial process mark a significant development in Punjab’s political and legal landscape, as one of the state’s most high-profile leaders faces serious financial misconduct allegations.
