Strongly criticizing the recent acquittal of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has termed the verdict a serious injustice to the victim families who have been waiting for justice for nearly four decades.
In a statement issued from his office, Advocate Dhami said that Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri riot cases has deeply hurt the sentiments of families who have been fighting a long legal battle since November 1984.
He stated that the court’s decision has caused severe emotional distress to the victims, who have been struggling for justice for around 41 years. According to him, the verdict has once again shaken their faith in the justice system.
The SGPC President described the November 1984 anti-Sikh riots as one of the darkest and most brutal chapters in Indian history, during which Sikhs were targeted in an organized and violent manner under alleged political patronage.
Advocate Dhami pointed out that Sikh organizations and victim families have been relentlessly pursuing justice for decades. He said that after such a prolonged struggle, the acquittal has not only disappointed the affected families but has also caused deep pain to the entire Sikh community.
Reiterating his stand, he maintained that Sajjan Kumar was clearly responsible for the violence in Delhi and is already serving a sentence in another related case. Allowing him to escape punishment in these cases, Dhami said, was unfortunate and highly discouraging.
He urged the authorities to ensure that justice is delivered to the victims and that those responsible for the 1984 violence are held accountable without delay.
