The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab senior leader and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema has written a letter to Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi demanding immediate release of money from the Chief Minister’s Cancer Relief Fund for the treatment of cancer victims and to make proper arrangements for the treatment of the victims in Punjab.
Telling about the letter issued to Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, from the party headquarters here on Wednesday, Harpal Singh Cheema said, “The Chief Minister Cancer Relief Fund was set up by the Punjab Government but for a long time no assistance was being provided to the cancer victims of Punjab from this fund. On the other hand, cancer patients are dying while waiting for government help to get their treatment.”
Addressing the Chief Minister, Cheema wrote that for the last few years the people of Punjab were suffering from a dreadful disease like cancer; however a large part of the Malwa had been badly affected by the cancer. He said the treatment of a deadly disease like cancer was not cheap in Punjab and people used to go to hospitals in Punjab along with Rajasthan and Delhi for treatment of their family members.
He said that due to lack of proper treatment in Punjab, the people from Malwa region travel to Rajasthan by a train to seek treatment for cancer and the train is called ‘Cancer Train’ which was introduced by the Congress government of Punjab and exposes the work done by the government in the field of health services.
The AAP leader further said that a lot of money is spent on cancer treatment and many families have even sold land, property and jewelry for the treatment of their cancer-stricken member, which has greatly worsened the financial condition of the cancer-stricken family and left many families unable to afford treatment. Cheema said that most of the cancer patients were from extremely poor families who were not able to get treatment for this dreadful disease.
Harpal Singh Cheema said the disadvantage of Punjab was that every year crops were destroyed in the Malwa region due to some disease or pest attack and this wastage of crops was a disaster on the families of the victims. The devastation of crops has a detrimental effect not only on the farmers but also on the working class as their main source of income is crops.
He alleged, “In the rule of the Congress government in Punjab, the people did not get ‘Ghar Ghar Rozgar’ and good and cheap treatment, but the cancer victims also did not get the money donated by the donors to the CM Cancer Relief Fund for their treatment.”
Cheema appealed to the Chief Minister to release funds from the CM Cancer Relief Fund for the treatment of the cancer victims and also to provide free and modern treatment to the victims on the lines of the Arvind Kejriwal government of Delhi.
