Chandigarh, October 11, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
BJP Mahila Morcha workers staged a protest in Chandigarh on Sunday, demanding action against Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual and mental harassment levelled by 11 female students.
The protest was led by Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur. According to the party, hundreds of workers attempted to march towards the Congress office but were stopped by police barricades. A confrontation followed, after which several protesters, including Jai Inder Kaur, were taken into police custody.
Addressing the media, Jai Inder Kaur alleged that 11 women students at JNU had accused Akoijam of sexual and mental harassment. She further claimed that the university’s internal inquiry had substantiated the allegations and that JNU had dismissed him from service on October 9, 2026.
Targeting the Congress leadership, she questioned the silence of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party president Mallikarjun Kharge over the allegations against their party’s MP.
“Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge frequently speak about women’s safety and dignity, but why are they completely silent when serious allegations emerge against their own Member of Parliament? Is protecting their political interests more important than ensuring justice for women?” she asked.
Jai Inder Kaur accused the Congress of shielding its MP and criticised the party’s record on women’s empowerment. She contrasted its response with initiatives undertaken by the BJP-led Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The BJP Mahila Morcha called for the immediate suspension of Akoijam from the Congress, his resignation from the Lok Sabha, strict legal action in the matter and a public apology from the Congress leadership to the 11 complainants.
“Women’s dignity and safety must never be compromised for political convenience. Congress must break its silence and take immediate action,” Jai Inder Kaur asserted.
The allegations and claims regarding the university inquiry and dismissal were presented by the BJP during the protest.
