The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurbakhsh Singh, posted at Sadar Police Station in Faridkot, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹80,000, as part of the state government’s ongoing campaign against corruption.
An official spokesperson for the State Vigilance Bureau said the arrest followed a complaint filed by a resident of Ghugiana village in Faridkot district.
According to the complaint, ASI Gurbakhsh Singh had allegedly already accepted ₹40,000 from the complainant in exchange for cancelling a case registered against him. The officer subsequently allegedly demanded an additional ₹80,000 to have the case cancelled.
Unwilling to pay the further bribe, the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Ferozepur Range and reported the matter.
Acting on the complaint, a Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap and allegedly caught the ASI red-handed while he was accepting ₹80,000 from the complainant. The operation was conducted in the presence of two official witnesses, the spokesperson said.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Ferozepur. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
