Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday effectively confirmed his exit as Punjab Congress president by changing his designation on his official X profile to “Former PPCC President”, ending the uncertainty surrounding reports of his resignation.
Reports since Wednesday had said that the Congress high command had decided to replace Warring and that he had offered his resignation. However, there had been no formal announcement from the Congress leadership confirming his exit. Multiple reports, citing party sources, had said the leadership had conveyed its decision to Warring.
The first confirmation from Warring’s own side came through his X bio on Thursday afternoon. He initially changed his designation from President, INC Punjab to “Former President INC Punjab” and, within minutes, modified it again to “Former PPCC President”.
His other credentials — MP from Ludhiana, former Punjab Cabinet Minister, former Gidderbaha MLA and former Indian Youth Congress president — remained in his profile.
Interestingly, Warring had avoided confirming his resignation when encountered by media persons earlier in the day. He said he had just returned from his morning walk and would speak to the media later. In another interaction Thursday, he declined to comment on the speculation surrounding the leadership change.
The change comes after prolonged differences within the Punjab Congress, with a section of senior leaders seeking a change in the state leadership. The issue gathered momentum after Sachin Pilot replaced Bhupesh Baghel as the AICC in-charge for Punjab and began consultations with state leaders. Reports say organisational feedback collected during those interactions was subsequently placed before the Congress high command.
Warring had been heading the Punjab Congress since April 2022.
Attention has now shifted to the appointment of his successor ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Several senior Congress leaders are being mentioned for the post, while an official announcement from the party is awaited.
