Posters and hoardings questioning the BJP on drugs, Punjab’s river waters and its reported political understanding with the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) appeared at several locations in Jalandhar on Wednesday, ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally marking the conclusion of the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’.
The hoardings, which carried Shah’s photograph, raised three questions concerning issues that have figured prominently in Punjab’s political discourse.
The questions asked why drugs were allegedly being smuggled into Punjab from Gujarat, why Punjab’s water was allegedly being given to Haryana and Rajasthan, and why the BJP wanted to join hands with the SAD (Badal) and bring back what the posters described as the “black farm laws”.
The appearance of the hoardings at major intersections in Jalandhar was also reported by The Tribune on Wednesday.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said the posters were part of a wider campaign during the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’. The party had raised the same three questions when the BJP launched the yatra from Pathankot on September 18, saying posters would follow the campaign across Punjab.
On the drugs issue, the posters questioned the BJP over alleged trafficking routes from Gujarat into Punjab. The AAP said the BJP should address questions about the source and interstate movement of narcotics instead of focusing its anti-drug campaign solely on Punjab.
The second question concerned Punjab’s river waters and the state’s longstanding dispute over water sharing with Haryana and Rajasthan. The AAP said the BJP should clearly explain its position on Punjab’s water rights.
The third question concerned the BJP’s reported efforts to establish a political understanding with the SAD (Badal). The posters asked why the BJP wanted to join hands with the Akali Dal and bring back the “black farm laws”, a reference to the three farm laws enacted by the Centre in 2020 and subsequently repealed.
The BJP’s 13-day ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, launched on September 18, covered all 117 Assembly constituencies through four routes before culminating in Shah’s Jalandhar rally on Wednesday.
The posters appeared as Shah addressed the concluding rally of the campaign, where he made drug eradication a central theme and said the BJP would work to eliminate the trade in synthetic drugs from Punjab by December 31, 2029 if voted to power.
The AAP said the BJP should respond to the questions raised on the hoardings and provide clarity on its positions concerning drugs, Punjab’s waters and its reported political understanding with the SAD (Badal).
