The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has urged the Punjab government to hand over the investigation into a case related to Sri Anandpur Sahib to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami saying an independent agency was needed to ensure a fair probe.
The demand was made at a meeting of the SGPC’s Executive Committee held at its headquarters in Amritsar on Wednesday under Dhami’s leadership.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Dhami said an FIR had been registered following allegations made by a woman in connection with the Sri Anandpur Sahib matter and that the investigation should not become a subject of a “social media trial”.
He said some groups had raised objections to the SGPC’s own inquiry team, while there was also a lack of public confidence in the investigation being conducted by the Punjab Police.
“In view of this, the Executive Committee demands that the Punjab government hand over the investigation of this case to the CBI,” Dhami said.
He added that the SGPC inquiry team would continue its administrative inquiry, while the CBI could examine all aspects of the matter and arrive at an independent conclusion.
Dhami said that if the Punjab government did not transfer the investigation to the CBI within three days, the SGPC would approach the Governor of Punjab to press for the demand.
On questions over his silence on the matter in recent days, Dhami said that since a case had been registered and was under investigation, it would not be appropriate to make investigation-related facts public prematurely.
Appeal over Bhai Rajoana case
The Executive Committee also discussed the issue concerning jailed Sikh figure Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana following an SGPC delegation’s meeting with him on Tuesday under the leadership of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj.
Dhami said Rajoana had expressed his views, in accordance with his understanding of Gurmat, regarding the withdrawal of the petition filed by the SGPC on his behalf.
He said the Executive Committee agreed with the arguments put forward by Rajoana, but pointed out that the petition had been filed in accordance with the directions of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The committee, he said, had therefore appealed to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to issue appropriate directions in the matter in the light of Sikh philosophy and history.
Dhami also urged the government to immediately grant parole to Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara so that he could meet his ailing mother.
The SGPC also extended its full support to the Khalsa March being organised by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha on October 2.
Dhami opposes separate Punjab Act for SGPC elections
Dhami also criticised calls by some quarters for a separate Punjab Act to govern SGPC elections.
He said the SGPC was a century-old institution that came into existence after significant sacrifices and alleged that attempts were being made under what he described as an “anti-Sikh” agenda to undermine its constitutional status and wider character.
He urged those advocating a separate Punjab Act to consider what he described as the potential consequences for the Sikh community.
On the delay in SGPC elections, Dhami said the issue was the responsibility of the government and that the SGPC had repeatedly demanded that the elections be held on time.
Thanks for participation in Miri Piri Khalsa March
The SGPC president also thanked Sikh institutions, organisations and devotees for their participation and support during the Miri Piri Khalsa March organised to highlight Punjab’s issues, challenges and problems and promote Sikh awareness.
He praised SGPC officials and employees for the services rendered during the march, saying it provided an opportunity for direct interaction with young people and highlighted several challenges facing Punjab.
Dhami said interactions with people in village gatherings during the march brought attention to the impact of drugs on Punjab’s youth. He said drugs such as “chitta” were widely available and were damaging the younger generation.
He also said several young people pledged during the march to maintain the Sikh appearance and give up drugs, describing it as a positive beginning.
The Executive Committee also approved various matters relating to Section 85, Section 87, trusts and departments connected with education.
