The Anti-Fascist Attacks Front organised a protest rally at the Vishnu Ganesh Pingle Hall of Desh Bhagat Yadgar in Jalandhar on Wednesday, opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanding the restoration of voter lists that existed before the exercise.
The rally was presided over by Darshan Nahar, Kulwinder Singh Waraich and Ashwani Kumar Lakhan Kalan. Speakers representing the RMPI, CPI (ML) New Democracy and CPI (ML) Liberation included Mangat Ram Pasla, Darshan Khatkar, Sukh Darshan Natt, Pargat Singh Jamarai, Hans Raj Pabwan and Surinder Sharma. Mahipal conducted the proceedings.
Addressing the gathering, the leaders alleged that the SIR was part of a deliberate effort by the RSS, BJP and the Narendra Modi-led government to deprive millions of Indians, particularly poor people, minorities, Dalits, women, tribal communities and marginalised groups, of their voting rights.
They accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of facilitating the exercise and called for his immediate dismissal and the registration of a criminal case against him. The speakers also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that their actions undermined constitutional principles and democratic values.
The leaders further claimed that several previous elections won by the BJP did not reflect the genuine public mandate. They demanded that all elections held after the SIR be annulled and that electoral rolls in place before the revision be restored. They also alleged that the SIR was an indirect attempt to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The organisers announced that they would intensify public mobilisation to press for their demands.
Shiv Kumar Pathankot, Satish Rana, Mohan Singh Dhamana and Charanjit Singh Bhinder were among those present at the rally. Following the meeting, protesters held a demonstration through the city.
