Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Jalandhar on Wednesday, September 30, to address the concluding rally of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, a statewide campaign against drug abuse that has covered all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab.
The rally is expected to be a major political mobilisation by the BJP ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The party launched four simultaneous yatras from different parts of the state on September 18. Together, they have covered nearly 4,000 km and will culminate at the Jalandhar rally.
The campaign aims to highlight the issue of drug abuse and mobilise public support for a drug-free Punjab. BJP leaders have estimated that around two lakh people will attend the concluding programme.
The party has made arrangements at a site spread over 50 to 55 acres, with approximately 40 acres earmarked for the main gathering and the remaining area designated for parking. Nearly 2,000 buses carrying party workers and supporters from across Punjab are expected to reach Jalandhar for the event.
The BJP also plans to highlight the experiences of families affected by drug abuse during the rally.
Shah’s visit comes as the BJP steps up its political activities in Punjab, with the drug menace emerging as one of its key campaign issues ahead of the Assembly elections. The party has criticised the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over its handling of the problem, while the state government has maintained its commitment to tackling drug abuse.
BJP leaders have described the ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ as an effort to raise awareness about drug abuse and encourage public participation in addressing addiction.
To review preparations for the rally, Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon and state in-charge Satish Poonia visited the venue and held discussions with officials on security, traffic management, parking, public convenience and other arrangements.
Dhillon said the ‘Nasha Mukti Maha Rally’ was not merely a political programme but also a public awareness campaign aimed at freeing Punjab from drugs. He said BJP workers were making efforts to ensure the rally’s success.
He described drug abuse as a serious challenge facing Punjab and said the party had been reaching out to people in villages and cities through the statewide yatra to spread awareness about the issue.
