Amritsar Rural Police have arrested a woman, her husband and her brother for their alleged involvement in a cross-border smuggling network, recovering more than 10 kg of heroin and two assault rifles, including an AK-47 and an AK-56, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday.
The police recovered 10.030 kg of heroin, two assault rifles, three magazines and 10 live cartridges from the accused during the operation.
The arrested persons have been identified as Sandeep Singh, 32, and his wife Kamaljit Kaur, 31, both residents of Brar village in Amritsar Rural, and Kamaljit’s brother Bikramjit Singh, 23, a resident of Gumanpura village. Sandeep Singh is a history-sheeter with four criminal cases registered against him under laws including the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations suggested that the accused were allegedly linked to foreign-based smugglers and were procuring illegal weapons and narcotics for further distribution in Punjab. Further investigation is underway to establish the network’s backward and forward linkages and identify other people involved, he added.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Border Range, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that, acting on specific intelligence, police teams from Gharinda Police Station carried out a targeted operation and arrested the three accused along with the contraband and weapons.
According to IGP Bhullar, preliminary investigations revealed that the accused had leased approximately one acre of land for a guava orchard in Modhe village, around 500 metres from the India-Pakistan border fence. The orchard was allegedly being used as a landing and retrieval point for drug and weapons consignments dropped by drones from across the border.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar Rural, Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said Sandeep Singh and Kamaljit Kaur were allegedly managing the cross-border smuggling operations, while Bikramjit Singh reportedly assisted as a courier, retrieving, transporting and delivering the consignments.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 420, dated September 25, 2026, at Gharinda Police Station under Sections 21, 23 and 29 of the NDPS Act and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
