The Punjab Government has launched an initiative to develop 3,763 villages with 40 per cent or more Scheduled Caste (SC) population as ‘Model Villages’, Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said on Sunday.
Under the initiative, the Department of Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities has released Rs 201 crore to Deputy Commissioners across the state for basic infrastructure and civic development works in the identified villages.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said additional funds would be released in phases, as required, to ensure comprehensive development of all 3,763 villages.
She said the initiative, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, aims to strengthen rural infrastructure and ensure equitable access to basic facilities and improved living conditions.
The released funds will be used for projects including solid and liquid waste management systems, installation of solar street lights, strengthening of Anganwadi centres and construction of toilet facilities.
According to the minister, the measures are aimed at improving cleanliness, environmental conditions, public safety and essential civic amenities in rural areas.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the programme goes beyond infrastructure development and is intended to improve the quality of life of rural communities, with better facilities for children, women, senior citizens and families.
She described the release of Rs 201 crore as the first phase of the development programme and said further financial assistance would be provided in a phased manner to transform the identified villages into cleaner, modern and better-equipped rural communities.
The minister reiterated the state government’s commitment to social justice, inclusive development and people-centric governance, saying every village should become an equal participant in Punjab’s development.
