Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Sunday criticised the Congress-led opposition over its allegations concerning the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying the poll panel’s latest clarification had exposed what he described as a “manufactured controversy”.
Dhillon’s remarks came a day after the ECI said decisions related to the SIR exercise had received the unanimous approval of all three Election Commissioners. The poll panel also clarified that a letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary concerned the functioning of an officer on deputation and was not related to any policy matter or the ECI’s IT division.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Dhillon said the ECI’s clarification showed that decisions on SIR and other major operational matters had been taken with the approval of the full Commission.
“The Commission’s clarification had made it clear that decisions relating to SIR and other major operational matters were taken with the approval of all three Election Commissioners,” Dhillon said.
He accused the Congress and its allies of trying to create an impression of a division within a constitutional institution and said political parties should not target the Election Commission without verification.
Dhillon also referred to the ECI’s clarification on the Cabinet Secretary communication, saying attempts to link the letter to electoral-roll decisions were misleading. The ECI has said the communication related to the functioning of an officer on deputation and that the work redistribution orders issued by the officer were not implemented after directions from the two Election Commissioners.
“The politics of suspicion cannot replace facts,” Dhillon said, arguing that questions and suggestions raised during institutional deliberations should not automatically be treated as disagreement over final decisions.
He further criticised opposition allegations of collusion between the ECI and BJP, saying such claims were “highly immature” and that political parties should instead encourage eligible citizens to participate in the electoral process and cooperate with authorities in keeping electoral rolls accurate and updated.
The ECI, in its September 26 statement, said special measures were being taken to assist voters facing notices during the SIR process, including doorstep document collection by Booth Level Officers in specified cases. It also extended deadlines for claims and objections in Delhi and Maharashtra.
Dhillon said political parties had the right to question decisions and seek clarifications, but alleged that repeated unverified claims against constitutional institutions could affect public confidence in them.
