Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Punjab Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday accused the Congress of repeatedly targeting the Dalit community through statements and actions, alleging that the party’s “anti-Dalit mindset” had once again been exposed.
Cheema alleged that Congress leaders, from Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring to leaders at other levels, had made derogatory remarks concerning the Dalit community.
“Derogatory remarks had been made about the colour and caste of the highly respected former Home Minister of India late Boota Singh Ji, while on other occasions, Congress leaders had made objectionable remarks reflecting their hostility towards the Dalit community,” Cheema said.
Referring to a recent incident in Namol village, Cheema alleged that several women had raised concerns about attempts by local Congress leaders to facilitate drug sales and criticised the Punjab government. He further alleged that Congress leaders subsequently made objectionable remarks against Dalit women.
“Such remarks were not only deeply disrespectful but also reflected the Congress leadership’s low level of political discourse and its hateful attitude towards the Dalit community,” he said.
Cheema also alleged that Congress leaders had repeatedly targeted members of the Dalit community through their statements and conduct, citing the remarks concerning former Union Home Minister Boota Singh and the Namol incident.
The AAP leader said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab government was working for the welfare of the people and alleged that Congress leaders were attempting to create social divisions because they were “frightened and frustrated” by the government’s work.
“The AAP government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is continuously working for the welfare of the people of Punjab,” Cheema said.
He condemned what he described as anti-Dalit statements and actions by Congress leaders and accused the opposition party of attempting to create social divisions in the state.
