Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state be suspended until the Assembly elections, due in the next six months.
Warring also demanded that the elections be conducted using the existing electoral rolls that served as the basis for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, without any deletions.
He said this would ensure that no genuine voter is denied the right to vote.
In a statement, the Punjab Congress chief claimed that thousands of genuine and eligible first-time voters were being denied the franchise because of what he described as complexities in the new Form 6 required for voter registration.
Warring particularly objected to the requirement for first-time voters to provide references to their parents or grandparents in the previous electoral roll, describing it as a difficult condition to fulfil.
The Congress leader reiterated the party’s allegation that the SIR, in its current form, was an attempt to “disenfranchise” lakhs of voters whom the BJP allegedly suspects of not supporting it. He said recent developments had, in the party’s view, reinforced these apprehensions.
“This has shaken the faith of the people in the fairness of elections,” Warring said.
He noted that the draft electoral rolls for Punjab were yet to be released, but claimed there were indications and apprehensions that the names of lakhs of voters could be deleted.
“This will be the travesty of justice and electoral democracy that a large section of voters is disenfranchised just a few months ahead of the elections,” Warring said.
He demanded that the SIR exercise be suspended until the Assembly elections and conducted afterwards with transparency and without what he described as unnecessary complexities.
