The Regional Transport Office (RTO), SAS Nagar, has launched a targeted enforcement drive against alleged tax evasion by other-state tourist transport operators in Dera Bassi, imposing penalties and tax dues amounting to Rs 8.22 lakh.
The enforcement operation was conducted following complaints regarding non-payment of applicable Punjab taxes by inter-state tourist vehicles. The drive was led by Regional Transport Officer Harpreet Singh Atwal, along with Assistant Regional Transport Officer Gagandeep Singh and departmental enforcement staff.
Surprise checking points were set up at key routes across Dera Bassi subdivision to verify compliance with Punjab road tax and passenger tax requirements, valid permits and other mandatory documents.
During the operation, 10 tourist buses and three Force Urbania vans, besides other commercial passenger vehicles, were challaned for violations of motor vehicle laws and non-payment of applicable taxes. Compounding fees and tax dues totalling Rs 8.22 lakh were imposed on the defaulters.
The non-compliant vehicles were impounded and lodged at Lehli and Lalru police stations pending completion of regulatory formalities and payment of outstanding tax dues.
The RTO has warned operators of tourist buses, maxi cabs and luxury passenger vans registered in other states that enforcement against violations will continue on inter-state routes in SAS Nagar.
Operators have been advised to ensure payment of all applicable Punjab taxes and carry valid permits and authorisations. Officials said violations would invite action under the law, including penalties and impoundment of vehicles.
