A Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) delegation has reached Kathmandu with four trucks of relief material for people affected by devastating floods in Nepal. The supplies will be distributed among affected families with the assistance of the local government.
The relief consignment includes generators, solar lights, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, blankets, quilts, khes, bedsheets, floor mats, utensils and essential food items such as rice and pulses.
The delegation was sent under the directions of SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami. It comprises SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan, OSD Satbir Singh, secretary Balwinder Singh Kahliwan, additional manager Satnam Singh Jhabal and gurdwara inspector Kashmir Singh.
Speaking about the relief effort, Mannan said the SGPC had consistently undertaken humanitarian services during natural disasters. He recalled that the committee had also provided significant assistance during the natural disaster in Nepal in 2015.
He said langar services had been continuing in flood-affected areas for several days following the latest devastation, under the directions of Dhami.
Mannan said an SGPC delegation had earlier visited Nepal and coordinated with the government and local residents to assess requirements and assured them that relief material would be sent according to the needs identified on the ground.
The four trucks carrying the supplies have now reached Kathmandu. The material will be taken to affected families in coordination with the local government, he said.
Mannan also acknowledged the assistance being provided in the relief operations by Pritam Singh, president of Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang, Kathmandu; his son Angad Singh; general secretary Harpal Singh Pali; Darshan Singh; Gurdev Singh; Kulwant Singh; and Amarjit Singh, in-charge of Sikh Mission Nepal.
Pritam Singh and Angad Singh appreciated the SGPC’s relief efforts and said the Sikh institution had consistently stood by humanity during times of distress. They also thanked Dhami and the SGPC management for the assistance being extended to flood victims in Nepal.
