Amritsar, September 18, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants while he was on PCR duty in Amritsar shortly after midnight on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

The deceased has been identified as ASI Harjit Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran who was posted at Gate Hakima Police Station in Amritsar.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visited the crime scene on Friday along with IGP Border Range Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill and other senior police officers to take first-hand stock of the investigation.

Speaking to the media at the spot, the DGP said the assailants had followed the ASI on a motorcycle before attacking him at around 12.30 am in the Gate Hakiman Grain Market area.

According to the preliminary investigation, a single bullet was fired from close range with a .30-bore weapon, hitting Harjit Singh in the back near his neck.

The injured ASI was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His body was subsequently sent for postmortem examination.

DGP Yadav said multiple police teams had been constituted and the case was being investigated with the help of technical and other evidence to identify and apprehend those responsible.

He asserted that the assailants would be arrested soon and the police would also establish the motive behind the killing.

The DGP said exemplary action would be taken not only against the killers but also against anyone found to be behind the attack.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann expressed grief over the death of the police officer and announced ex-gratia financial assistance of Rs 1 crore for his family.

An additional Rs 1 crore would be provided to the family under the insurance arrangement with HDFC Bank, taking the announced financial support to Rs 2 crore.

The killing comes less than four months after another Punjab Police ASI, 52-year-old Joga Singh, was killed by assailants near Hamja village on the Fatehgarh Churian-Majitha Road on May 24, 2026.

Earlier in the day, DGP Punjab Police also posted on social media ‘X’ and said, “Our brave police officer, ASI Harjit Singh of district #Amritsar, has laid down his life in the line of duty. Punjab Police stands firmly with the bereaved family in their hour of grief. Hon’ble Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia amount of ₹1 crore for his family, while an additional ₹1 crore insurance payout will be provided by HDFC Bank to his family. The martyr will be accorded full police honours. May his soul rest in peace. Our prayers are with his family and relatives.”
