Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO has condemned the alleged attempt to damage a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Barian Kalan village in Hoshiarpur district, directing the police to investigate the incident immediately and arrest those responsible at the earliest.
ETO said any attempt by anti-social elements to disturb Punjab’s peace, create divisions or undermine social harmony would be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
“Baba Sahib Dr BR Ambedkar is a source of inspiration for all of us. He gave the country its Constitution and ensured equal rights for every citizen,” the minister said.
He described the alleged act as a malicious and hateful attempt by certain elements to disturb law and order in Punjab, asserting that the government would not tolerate such incidents under any circumstances.
The minister said police authorities had been instructed to establish the facts of the incident and take prompt action against those found responsible. He said exemplary and strict action would be taken under the law to ensure that such an incident was not repeated.
ETO also appealed to people to maintain peace and communal harmony and avoid actions that could disturb the social fabric of the state.
He said the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government remained committed to protecting the dignity of every citizen and upholding respect for national leaders, including Dr BR Ambedkar.
“I want to assure everyone that irrespective of how influential those responsible may be, they will soon be in police custody and will be given the strictest punishment as per law for their actions,” ETO said.
