Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Media In-charge Baltej Pannu launched a sharp attack on Congress Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot over his visit to the state, questioning the Congress leadership’s record on the 1984 Sikh massacre and its alleged protection of those accused in the violence.
Taking a swipe at Pilot’s name, Pannu said Congress leaders who once described themselves as “sailors” and aspired to become Chief Minister had failed to prevent the party from sinking, and that a “Pilot” had now been sent to rescue the party.
Welcoming Sachin Pilot to Punjab, Pannu said he would have to answer questions about Congress’ alleged atrocities against Punjabis before seeking votes from the people of the state.
Pannu questioned why Congress had, in his words, repeatedly wronged minorities and continued to maintain close political ties with leaders accused in the 1984 Sikh massacre.
He specifically cited Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Kamal Nath, alleging that the party had provided them political protection and patronage despite their association with the 1984 violence.
“Why did Congress give political patronage to leaders like Sajjan Kumar and Kamal Nath?” Pannu asked, while questioning why Congress leaders still considered such figures their “idols”.
Pannu said the Congress must explain how it could seek votes in Punjab while carrying the legacy of the 1984 violence in Delhi.
“Punjab can never forget 1984,” he said, adding that before campaigning in the state, Sachin Pilot should clarify which Congress leaders were involved in the massacre, why the accused were allegedly protected for so long, and when the party would stop treating them as political icons.
