The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested seven government officials and one private person while allegedly accepting bribes in six separate trap cases during August, officials said on Monday.
According to a spokesperson for the state Vigilance Bureau, the action was part of its ongoing drive against corruption among public servants and others across different sectors in Punjab.
During the month, the Bureau also presented challans in 13 vigilance cases before various competent courts. In addition, three vigilance enquiries were registered for detailed investigation into alleged corruption cases.
The spokesperson said the VB registered 10 criminal cases against 23 accused during August, including 17 government employees.
The Bureau also secured convictions in four bribery cases that it had investigated and contested before the courts. Eight accused were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment ranging from four to five years.
The courts also imposed fines ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 1 lakh on the convicted persons, according to the Vigilance Bureau.
The latest action is part of the state government’s continuing efforts, through the Vigilance Bureau, to curb bribery and corruption in government functioning.
