Someone once asked an engineer, “Why are you proud to be an engineer?” The engineer gave a deeply touching and thought-provoking reply. He said that lawyers are entrusted with helping citizens secure justice via the legal system, while doctors contribute to protecting citizens’ health and treating diseases. Engineers, however, represent a profession that has a direct and far-reaching impact on the development, prosperity and well-being of society.
He further explained that an engineer’s vision is never confined to an individual or a single institution. Engineers constantly strive to understand the emerging needs of society, find practical solutions to their challenges, develop innovative technologies and make human life safer, easier and more comfortable. “That is why I take pride in being a member of the engineering fraternity,” he said.
National Engineers’ Day is celebrated across India every year on September 15. The day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the invaluable contribution of engineers who have demonstrated expertise, intelligence, creativity and dedication in shaping the nation and the world.
Engineering has performed a transformative role in reshaping modern society and laying the foundations of contemporary development.
In India, National Engineers’ Day is observed in memory of the legendary engineer and Bharat Ratna awardee Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He made an extraordinary contribution to the development and nation-building process of modern India. His visionary work in irrigation, water management, dam construction and industrial development continues to inspire generations. His name is particularly associated with several landmark water projects, including the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam.
Visvesvaraya’s contribution was not confined to engineering projects. He also made key contributions to the fields of education, industry and administration. His role in the development of the erstwhile Mysore State remains particularly noteworthy. In recognition of his outstanding services and dedication to the nation, he was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 1955 by the Government of India.
National Engineers’ Day is therefore not merely an occasion to remember one great engineer. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the countless engineers whose hard work, perseverance, professional excellence and dedicated service have contributed to the country’s progress. Behind India’s roads, bridges, buildings, power projects, irrigation systems, communication networks, industries and modern technological infrastructure lie the vision, expertise and tireless efforts of engineers.
Today, several domains of engineering—including civil, mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, chemical, biomedical, computer science and information technology—are advancing at an unprecedented pace. Progress in these fields has made human life more convenient, efficient and comfortable.
From industrial advancement to the modernisation of agriculture, engineers have opened new avenues of opportunity and created innovative solutions across virtually every sphere of life.
Engineers also perform a significant role in translating scientific discoveries into practical applications and making their benefits accessible to society. Science provides knowledge, discoveries and theories, while engineering transforms these ideas into practical solutions that serve humanity.
It would, therefore, be difficult to imagine the conveniences and technological achievements of the modern age without the indispensable contribution of engineering.
The engineering fraternity has made an invaluable contribution to the all-round development of Punjab. The power sector, in particular, has performed a principal role in strengthening the state’s agriculture, industry and overall economic growth.
