Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday announced that the HR-2 road in New Chandigarh would be renamed Shaheed Colonel Manpreet Singh Marg in honour of the Army officer who was killed while fighting terrorists in Anantnag in 2023.
The 200-foot-wide road from Mullanpur Chowk to the T-point has been named after Colonel Manpreet Singh, while a park in Sector 5-A has been dedicated as Shaheed Colonel Manpreet Singh Park.
Paying tribute to the martyr on his death anniversary, Mann said Punjab would continue to honour the sacrifices of its bravehearts and stand with their families.
Colonel Manpreet Singh, who was born in 1982 in village Bharojian, joined the Indian Army as a commissioned officer in 2005. He was serving as the Commanding Officer of 19 Rashtriya Rifles when he attained martyrdom on September 13, 2023, during an encounter with terrorists in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir.
The Centre posthumously awarded him the Kirti Chakra, the country’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, on August 15, 2024, in recognition of his exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice.
Mann said naming public places after the martyr would help preserve his legacy and inspire Punjab’s youth to serve the nation with courage and dedication.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state government’s policy of providing Rs 1 crore financial assistance to the families of Armed Forces, paramilitary personnel, police personnel and Agniveers who attain martyrdom in the line of duty.
He said Agniveers who return after completing their service would be accommodated in opportunities in the police, banking and Forest Department sectors.
Mann said communities that remember and honour their martyrs are the ones that progress, adding that the state government remained committed to the welfare of soldiers and their families.
Responding to a question on education, the Chief Minister said the government had undertaken major infrastructure improvements in schools and claimed that government school students were now performing strongly in competitive examinations such as JEE and NEET.
Lok Sabha MP Malwinder Singh Kang and others were present at the ceremony.
