The Punjab State Legal Services Authority (PSSLA) on Saturday conducted the National Lok Adalat across the state, taking up 6,54,612 cases and amicably settling 5,99,283 of them, with awards amounting to Rs 1,116,10,96,635 passed.
The National Lok Adalat was organised under the patronage of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and under the leadership of Justice Deepak Sibal, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority.
Giving details of the initiative, PSSLA Member Secretary Jagdeep Kaur Virk said the mega exercise was aimed at facilitating speedy, cost-effective and amicable settlement of disputes and advancing access to justice in line with Article 39-A of the Constitution.
A total of 404 Lok Adalat benches were constituted across all districts and sub-divisions of Punjab. The benches dealt with a wide range of matters, including civil, matrimonial, property, motor accident claims, banking, insurance and other compoundable cases.
The exercise witnessed active participation from litigants, judicial officers, advocates and other stakeholders. Officials said the settlements provided immediate relief to litigants while also helping reduce the pendency of cases in courts.
Several long-pending disputes, including matters that had remained unresolved for more than a decade, were settled during the Lok Adalat.
One such case from SAS Nagar involved a young couple whose prolonged matrimonial dispute was resolved through mediation. In the case titled Karmajeet Kaur vs Ravinder Singh, the petitioner had filed a petition against the respondent under Section 125 of the CrPC. The court persuaded the parties to reach a compromise, following which both husband and wife agreed to resume living together.
The Lok Adalat also received an overwhelming response from banking institutions, insurance companies, government departments and the general public, reflecting growing confidence in the mechanism for resolving disputes through mutual consent.
Justice Deepak Sibal appreciated the efforts of judicial officers, District Legal Services Authorities and volunteers across Punjab for ensuring the successful conduct of the mega event.
The Punjab State Legal Services Authority also acknowledged the support extended by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, District Legal Services Authorities, judiciary, members of the Bar, police authorities and civil administration.
