Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab chief spokesperson and MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has accused the Congress of doing “politics over dead bodies” following Rahul Gandhi’s post on the suicide of Sangrur resident Gulzar Singh.
Expressing grief over Gulzar Singh’s death, Dhaliwal said the Bhagwant Mann government acted immediately in the matter, arrested the accused and announced financial assistance for the victim’s family, along with a government job for one family member. He said the government had acted without delay to ensure justice for the family.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Dhaliwal alleged that the Congress has a long history of using tragic incidents for political purposes. He referred to the violence against Sikhs in 1984 and claimed that the Rajiv Gandhi government was formed against the backdrop of the massacre, with the Congress subsequently winning 414 Lok Sabha seats.
Dhaliwal also referred to Punjab’s political history in 1992, alleging that Congress benefited electorally from the deaths of thousands of youths during the militancy period. He further criticised the Shiromani Akali Dal, alleging that after winning 75 seats in 1997, its government promoted officers including K.P.S. Gill, Saini and Izhar Alam instead of taking action against them.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Dhaliwal said he should have watched a video of Gulzar Singh’s son before posting about the incident. He claimed that villagers had previously turned away Congress workers who visited the village for political purposes.
Dhaliwal also questioned the Congress leadership over allegations raised by former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in a letter to Sonia Gandhi regarding ministers and MLAs allegedly involved in the drug trade. He asked Rahul Gandhi to make public the names referred to in the letter and questioned what action was taken by the Congress.
He also raised the issue of the suicide of a contractor’s family in Faridkot and referred to a statement allegedly made by the injured wife blaming Raja Warring for the family’s situation.
On Punjab-related issues, Dhaliwal accused the Congress of taking away the state’s rights over Chandigarh, Punjabi-speaking areas and Panjab University. He said Congress leaders who regard Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler as role models had no moral right to claim concern for Punjab.
Dhaliwal said the Mann government had been fighting against drugs for the past four years, putting thousands of alleged drug traffickers behind bars and helping thousands of youths recover through treatment.
He asserted that under the Bhagwant Mann government, no person involved in drug trafficking would be spared, regardless of whether the individual was an AAP member or an outsider, an MLA or a sarpanch.
Dhaliwal said the people of Punjab had understood what he described as Congress’s politics over deaths and claimed that such politics would no longer work in the state.
