Punjab Police on Tuesday hosted the 10th Northern Regional Police Coordination Committee (NRPCC) meeting, bringing together senior police and security officials to strengthen inter-state coordination and devise joint strategies to tackle cross-border terrorism, gangster syndicates, organised crime and cybercrime.
The high-level meeting, chaired by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, was held in hybrid mode. Senior officials from the BSF, ITBP, CRPF, NIA, Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau and police forces from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Ladakh participated in the deliberations.
Emphasising the importance of institutionalised coordination, DGP Gaurav Yadav said the NRPCC would continue to serve as a unified platform for collective problem-solving, collaborative enforcement and effective prosecution.
“At its core, NRPCC is about coordination. As crime and security threats increasingly transcend state boundaries, effective intelligence sharing, seamless inter-agency coordination and swift joint action are critical to staying ahead of emerging threats,” he said.
During the meeting, Special DGP Traffic AS Rai highlighted the performance of Punjab’s Sadak Surakhia Force (SSF), which has contributed to a 52.87 per cent reduction in road fatalities. The force has recorded an average response time of six minutes and 41 seconds and rescued more than 60,570 people during 56,283 road incidents. DGP Ladakh Anand Kumar Jain expressed interest in learning from Punjab’s SSF model.
IGP Counter Intelligence Ashish Choudhary said Punjab Police has established the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) to pursue fugitives allegedly coordinating crime and terror activities from abroad. Since 2024, 17 fugitives have been deported or extradited to India, including nine through OFTEC, while eight others have been arrested abroad through coordinated operations.
DIG Anti Narcotics Task Force Akhil Chaudhary outlined anti-drone measures to curb cross-border smuggling of arms and narcotics. Punjab has operationalised three anti-drone systems, while 64 dedicated nakas staffed by nearly 600 personnel are conducting round-the-clock surveillance.
Police forces from participating states and UTs also shared presentations on AI and emerging technologies, the inter-state terrorist-gangster-criminal nexus, new criminal laws, cybercrime and social media monitoring.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by ADGP Counter Intelligence Amit Prasad.
