Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted an illegal arms supply network with the arrest of two persons and recovered eight illegal .30 bore pistols and 103 live cartridges, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday.
The arrests were made as part of the ongoing drive to strengthen security and curb criminal activities in Punjab under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The arrested accused have been identified as Ranjit Singh alias Jeeta, 24, a resident of Bainka village in Tarn Taran, and Gurbir Singh alias Gora, 32, of Tara Singh village in Tarn Taran. Police said Ranjit Singh has a criminal history, with cases registered against him under the Arms Act, NDPS Act and Explosives Act.
According to DGP Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based smugglers through social media applications. They were allegedly receiving consignments of illegal foreign-made weapons and supplying them to criminal elements in Punjab.
The DGP said further investigation was underway to establish the backward and forward linkages of the network, verify alleged cross-border connections and identify all those involved in the illegal arms trade.
Sharing details of the operation, Amritsar Commissioner of Police Harmanbir Singh Gill said police acted on secret information and laid a naka near Gurdwara Bohri Sahib Road. Ranjit Singh was arrested and one .30 bore pistol along with three live cartridges was recovered from his possession.
During further investigation, police recovered four more .30 bore pistols and 100 live cartridges from Ranjit Singh, taking the recovery from him to five pistols and 103 cartridges.
Further questioning led police to his alleged associate Gurbir Singh alias Gora, who was subsequently arrested. Three .30 bore pistols were recovered from his possession.
The investigation also revealed that Gurbir Singh had returned from Dubai around six months ago, police said.
A case, FIR No. 264 dated August 30, 2026, has been registered under Sections 25(6), 25(7) and 25(8) of the Arms Act at Police Station Islamabad under Amritsar Commissionerate. Further investigation is in progress.
