Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma, IPS, on Thursday assumed charge of District SAS Nagar and outlined his priorities, with a focus on tackling organised crime, improving citizen-centric policing and strengthening police visibility across the district.
Addressing the media during his maiden press briefing, SSP Sharma thanked the Punjab Chief Minister and Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the district police force and maintaining law and order.
The SSP said the police would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards organised crime, extortion rackets and gangster networks, warning that criminal syndicates would be dealt with firmly.
To strengthen efforts against street crime, Mohali Police will intensify night domination operations, conduct strategic static and mobile checkpoints (nakabandi) and increase the visibility of Dial 112 Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) to facilitate rapid response during emergencies and incidents of street violence.
Emphasising accessibility, SSP Sharma said he would personally hear public grievances during designated office hours. Citizens were encouraged to provide information about drug peddlers, criminal elements, cyber fraud and domestic violence, with an assurance of time-bound action on complaints.
On community engagement, he said the district police would work closely with market and trader associations as well as Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to address security concerns and administrative issues at the grassroots level.
Highlighting SAS Nagar’s strategic position within the Tricity, SSP Sharma said proactive traffic management would remain a key priority during sit-ins and demonstrations to minimise disruption to commuters and ensure the unhindered movement of ambulances, school vehicles and other essential services.
He further said that, in accordance with the directions of the state authorities, a comprehensive manpower audit would be conducted to optimise police deployment. Personnel would be systematically shifted from non-core duties to frontline policing, strengthening police stations and ground-level units.
Earlier, SSP Sharma was accorded a warm welcome by senior police officers, including SP (City) Dilpreet Singh, SP (H) Navreet Singh Virk and SP (Investigation) Sourav Jindal. A police contingent also presented him with a traditional Guard of Honour.
