The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a protest in Jalandhar on Tuesday against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the visit of three BJP MPs to the residence of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who has been convicted in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The protest was held during the visit of Punjab BJP in-charge Satish Poonia to Jalandhar, with AAP leaders and workers raising slogans against the BJP and questioning the presence of its MPs at Sajjan Kumar’s residence. Police deployed barricades and personnel near the venue to prevent the protesters from entering.
The three BJP MPs — Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia and Kamaljeet Sehrawat — had visited Sajjan Kumar’s residence to pay their respects. The development triggered protests by AAP workers in several parts of Punjab, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Bathinda.
AAP leaders in Jalandhar said the 1984 anti-Sikh violence remained a deeply painful issue for the families of victims and questioned the BJP over the decision of its elected representatives to visit Sajjan Kumar’s residence.
Kartarpur MLA Balkar Singh said the 1984 violence had left a lasting wound on the Sikh community and alleged that the participation of senior BJP leaders in the tribute programme had hurt the sentiments of victim families.
He said the BJP and other political parties should not use the pain associated with the 1984 violence for political convenience and asserted that the families affected by the riots continued to deserve justice and dignity.
AAP leaders and workers demanded that the BJP take action against the three MPs and clarify its position on their visit to Sajjan Kumar’s residence. The party has also questioned how elected representatives holding public office could pay respects to a person convicted in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The Jalandhar protest formed part of a wider AAP campaign across Punjab. In Amritsar, AAP workers protested outside the residence of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, while demonstrations were also held in Ludhiana and Bathinda.
AAP leaders said the party would continue raising the issue of justice for the victims and families of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and oppose what it described as any attempt to disregard their pain and sentiments.
