Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj has strongly condemned the reported demolition of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, and called for immediate action against those responsible.
Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said the fact that a school was being operated at the gurdwara site did not mean that the Sikh community had abandoned or forgotten its heritage. He emphasised that Sikhs constitute a very small minority in Balochistan and said the Pakistan government had a responsibility to protect and preserve Sikh heritage sites.
According to information received by the Jathedar, the gurdwara building was demolished without informing the concerned community and the land was subsequently handed over to a private company for construction of a shopping plaza.
Calling for a thorough investigation, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj said it was deeply unfortunate that a place of worship belonging to a minority community had allegedly been demolished and its site transferred for private commercial purposes. He termed such actions detrimental to the interests and rights of minority communities.
The Akal Takht Jathedar urged the Pakistan government to take immediate and strict notice of the matter and involve the Sikh community in rebuilding the gurdwara at the same location.
He also demanded an immediate halt to construction of the proposed shopping plaza on the gurdwara site until the matter is resolved.
Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj further appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to take up the issue with the Pakistan government and make serious efforts to secure a resolution.
