Inspector General of Police Rajpal Singh Sandhu, IPS, who is set to retire from government service on August 31, 2026, was accorded a farewell at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP)-2, Jalandhar, where he took the salute at a ceremonial farewell parade.
Born on August 18, 1966, in Mansoorwal Bet village of Kapurthala, Sandhu completed his schooling at Sainik School, Kapurthala. He subsequently obtained an Arts (Honours) degree and a postgraduate degree in Geography.
Sandhu joined the Punjab Police as a probationer inspector on April 18, 1988. After completing initial training at the Police Training College, Phillaur, followed by field training in Faridkot district, he was posted to Amritsar in 1990 and served as SHO at various police stations in the district.
He was promoted as Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1993 and underwent his initial commando course. He subsequently served as a company commander on internal security duty in Assam. During his operational deployment in Assam in 1994-95, his services were highly appreciated by the DGP, Punjab, and he was awarded the Disc of Honour.
From 1996 to 1999, Sandhu served as the supervisory officer for the Payal subdivision in Ludhiana district and Balachaur subdivision in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. From 1999 to 2002, he served as DSP Headquarters in Jalandhar.
Promoted as Superintendent of Police in 2002, he held several important assignments, including SP City Jalandhar from 2003 to 2005, Staff Officer to the Additional DGP, Armed Battalions, and SP, Chief Minister’s Punjab Security from 2005 to 2007. He also served as SP Traffic and Security, Jalandhar, in 2008 and SP (Detective), Ludhiana Rural, in 2009.
Sandhu later served as Senior Superintendent of Police in Batala, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Faridkot and Kapurthala. During these postings, he played a significant role in solving several heinous and important unsolved cases, while under his leadership, multiple criminal gangs were busted and substantial quantities of stolen and looted property recovered. He also earned appreciation for action against drug traffickers and narcotics smugglers.
He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2023 and posted at PAP Headquarters. He subsequently served as DIG/PAP-1 and Training, Jalandhar; DIG/NRI, Punjab, SAS Nagar; and DIG/PAP-1 and Training, Punjab, Chandigarh.
Sandhu was promoted to the rank of IGP on January 2, 2026. On January 16, 2026, he was posted as IGP Crime, Punjab, with additional charge as IGP PAP-2, Chandigarh.
During his career, Sandhu received the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2012 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2025. He was also awarded 12 DGP Commendation Discs and four DGP Commendation Certificates.
Following the march-past during the farewell parade, Mandeep Singh Gill, PPS, Commandant Training, Jalandhar, Punjab, welcomed Sandhu and the other guests attending the ceremony. Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, PPS, AIG, PAP, Jalandhar, proposed the vote of thanks.
Retired police officers, commandants of various battalions, gazetted officers and a large number of police personnel attended the farewell ceremony.
