Akali Dal Punar Surjit president and former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Saturday confirmed that his party was holding talks with the BJP for a possible alliance, while also expressing willingness to ally with the Shiromani Akali Dal — but not under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Addressing mediapersons with Bibi Jagir Kaur and other party leaders by his side, Giani Harpreet Singh said his party had no objection to an alliance with the BJP, provided it was based on a clearly defined agenda concerning Punjab and the Panth.
“We have no problem having an alliance with the BJP, but it has to be an agenda-based alliance. Issues pertaining to Punjab and the Panth would have to be taken care of and addressed,” he said.
Confirming that communication between the two sides was already underway, Giani Harpreet Singh said, “We are having talks with BJP.”
His remarks assume significance amid renewed political speculation over possible realignments ahead of the next Punjab Assembly elections.
On the possibility of bringing together different Akali factions, Giani Harpreet Singh said Akali Dal Punar Surjit was willing to consider an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, but ruled out such an arrangement as long as the party remained under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal.
“We are ready to ally with the Shiromani Akali Dal, but not with the Badal family. We can’t have an alliance with SAD under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal, even as we would like to have an alliance with the SAD,” he said.
Giani Harpreet Singh also referred to Akali Dal Waris Punjab De while discussing the prospects of a broader Akali alignment.
“As far as I know, even Akali Dal Waris Punjab De would not go with SAD under the leadership of Sukhbir Badal,” he said.
The statement draws a clear distinction between the Shiromani Akali Dal as a political organisation and its present leadership, while simultaneously confirming that Akali Dal Punar Surjit is exploring an electoral understanding with the BJP.
