The Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha (Regd.) has strongly opposed the decision of Punjabi University, Patiala, to discontinue Punjabi as a subject from the fifth semester of the third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) programme, demanding its immediate restoration.
In a statement, Sabha president Darshan Buttar, general secretary Sushil Dussanjh, senior vice-president Makhan Singh Kuhar and office secretary Deep Devinder Singh said Punjabi should be restored not only in the BBA curriculum but also in other courses from which it had been removed. They further demanded that Punjabi be made a compulsory subject across all undergraduate programmes.
The office-bearers said Punjabi University had previously removed Punjabi from the second and third years of the Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) programme and some other courses. Following protests and campaigns by Punjabi language supporters, literary organisations and literary associations, the university had withdrawn those decisions, they said.
They described the latest move as a matter of concern, particularly because Punjabi University’s primary objective is to promote and develop the Punjabi language, literature and culture.
The Sabha leaders said Punjabi should not be gradually excluded from university courses; instead, opportunities for studying the language should be expanded. They stressed that Punjabi, as the mother tongue of Punjab, represents an important foundation of the state’s linguistic and cultural identity and should not be treated merely as an academic subject.
The organisation urged the university administration to immediately restore Punjabi in the fifth semester of BBA Part III and reintroduce it in other courses where it has been discontinued.
The Sabha also appealed to Punjabi language supporters, writers, literary organisations and literary associations to raise a united voice against the decision and work collectively to strengthen the position of Punjabi in higher education.
