In a major breakthrough in the sensational Neha Bassi murder case, police have arrested the deceased lecturer’s husband Umang Bassi and mother-in-law Kusum Bassi from Ujjain and have also recovered Neha’s six-year-old daughter.
The two accused are being brought to Jalandhar following their arrest.
The latest arrests come after police had earlier arrested Satpal Kaur, who has been described by Neha’s family as Umang Bassi’s girlfriend and has also been named in the case.
With the arrest of Umang Bassi and Kusum Bassi, three of the key accused named in connection with Neha’s death are now in police custody.
Neha Bassi, 36, a lecturer with Saint Soldier Group of Colleges, died while undergoing treatment at a Jalandhar hospital after allegedly being forced to consume Harpic toilet cleaner.
Police are expected to disclose further details regarding the arrests and investigation during a press conference.
Neha’s Six-Year-Old Daughter Recovered
Another significant development is the recovery of Neha’s six-year-old daughter Kiara Bassi.
Neha’s family had earlier expressed serious concern over the child’s whereabouts and safety and had sought her custody.
The family had claimed that Neha desperately wanted to see her daughter while battling for life in hospital and continued looking for her even while on a ventilator.
According to Neha’s sister-in-law Divya, Neha died without being able to see Kiara. The family has described the child as Neha’s last remaining memory and has appealed that her custody be handed over to them.
Satpal Kaur’s Husband Makes Serious Allegations
Meanwhile, Vishal Sharma, husband of Satpal Kaur, has come forward with a series of allegations regarding the relationship between his wife and Umang Bassi.
Sharma, who said he works as a cyber security consultant in Hyderabad, claimed that he and Satpal Kaur had a love marriage about 11 years ago and have a nine-year-old daughter.
According to Sharma, he discovered around six months ago that his wife had allegedly been having an extramarital relationship with Umang Bassi, whom he described as her former school friend, for around three years.
Sharma claimed that when he unexpectedly returned home on February 3, 2026, he found Satpal chatting with someone on her mobile phone. He alleged that when he attempted to check the conversation, she attacked him and subsequently left the house.
He further alleged that Umang Bassi later attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon outside his daughter’s school, Mayor World School. Sharma claimed that despite approaching police, no effective action was taken because of alleged political pressure.
These allegations have been made by Vishal Sharma and their veracity will be subject to police investigation.
Claims of 206 Pages of WhatsApp Chats
In another potentially significant claim, Vishal Sharma said he had recovered 206 pages of WhatsApp conversations between Satpal Kaur and Umang Bassi covering a period of around 15 days.
According to Sharma, the conversations allegedly indicated that the two were discussing how to leave their respective spouses — Neha Bassi and Vishal Sharma — or remove them from their way.
Sharma alleged that the conversations contained discussions about eliminating their respective life partners.
He claimed that his being away in Hyderabad because of his work may have saved him.
The alleged WhatsApp conversations could assume significance in the investigation if they have been taken into possession by police and their authenticity and contents are established during the probe.
Family Had Accused Husband, Mother-in-Law and Satpal Kaur
Neha’s brother Amrish Kumar had earlier alleged that Umang Bassi, his mother Kusum Bassi and Satpal Kaur were present when Neha was allegedly forced to consume Harpic.
The family alleged that the three jointly forced the toilet cleaner into Neha’s mouth.
Neha’s sister-in-law Divya had also alleged that Neha suffered harassment during her marriage and that the situation had worsened after Umang allegedly became involved with Satpal Kaur.
According to the family, Neha married Umang, a resident of Kartarpur Mandi, through a matrimonial website in February 2019. The couple subsequently had a daughter.
The family claimed that Neha had made allegations against her husband, mother-in-law and Satpal Kaur while she was critically ill in hospital.
Murder and Criminal Conspiracy Sections Added
Following Neha’s death, police added Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to murder, and Section 61(2), pertaining to criminal conspiracy, to the case on the basis of a fresh statement by her brother Amrish Kumar.
Police had earlier maintained that the investigation would establish whether Neha was forcibly administered the toilet cleaner or consumed it herself.
The arrests of the accused are now expected to enable investigators to question them about the circumstances leading to Neha’s death and examine the allegations levelled by her family.
IO Suspended, Kartarpur SHO Transferred
The case has also led to action within the police department.
Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk suspended ASI Bodh Raj, the Investigating Officer in the case, over negligence in the discharge of his duties.
Kartarpur Police Station SHO Ramandeep Singh was also transferred over alleged negligence in handling the high-profile case.
The action against the two police officials came amid mounting scrutiny over the investigation.
Earlier, ASI Bodh Raj had said police received information about Neha being admitted to Fortis Hospital in a critical condition. A police team went to the hospital to record her statement, but doctors reportedly declared her unfit to speak as she was on a ventilator, following which police approached the court.
The latest arrests mark a significant turn in the investigation, with Umang Bassi, Kusum Bassi and Satpal Kaur now reported to be in police custody and Neha’s six-year-old daughter recovered.
Further details, including the circumstances of the arrests in Ujjain and the progress of the investigation, are expected to emerge following the anticipated police briefing.
