Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday challenged the BJP to jointly inspect and compare 1,000 government schools each in Gujarat and Punjab, amid a political row over the condition of government schools in Punjab.
In a video message shared on X, Kejriwal said the BJP should provide a list of 1,000 schools in Gujarat, while he would provide a corresponding list from Punjab. He proposed that the schools be inspected jointly in the presence of the media and BJP representatives.
“Nowadays, BJP leaders are trying to defame the schools of Punjab. I challenge the BJP. You have been in power in Gujarat for 30 years, while our government has been in Punjab for around four-and-a-half years,” he said.
Kejriwal alleged that the BJP was attempting to malign Punjab’s government schools instead of improving schools in states where it is in power.
He claimed that Punjab has around 19,700 government schools, of which work has been completed in about 19,200, while improvement work is continuing in the remaining schools.
The AAP leader also cited the state’s recent performance in school education, saying Punjab had moved from a low ranking when the AAP came to power to the top position in the NITI Aayog School Education Quality Index. Punjab’s Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has also cited the state’s top ranking in the 2026 index.
Kejriwal further alleged that some videos being circulated to show poor conditions in Punjab schools were old, while others were doctored or AI-generated. He said the government was willing to address genuine shortcomings if they were brought to its attention.
“Our intentions are good. If you point out our mistakes, we will correct them. We want to make improvements,” he said, while urging critics not to target teachers, principals, parents and students.
Kejriwal said a joint inspection would allow people across the country to compare the condition of government schools in Gujarat and Punjab and assess the claims made by both sides.
