Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) has announced Papalpreet Singh, a close associate and former media adviser of jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, as its candidate from the Majitha Assembly constituency for the Punjab Assembly elections due next year.
The candidature was announced during a programme in the Majitha constituency. Party state media in-charge Shamsher Singh Padhri also confirmed that Papalpreet Singh had been named the party candidate from Majitha.
Papalpreet is presently lodged in Goindwal Sahib Jail in connection with the Ajnala police station assault case.
He was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following the 2023 crackdown against Amritpal Singh and his associates and was lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam. After spending nearly two years there, he was brought back to Punjab in April 2025 following the end of his NSA detention.
Punjab Police subsequently took him into custody in connection with the Ajnala case and produced him before a local court on April 11, 2025.
Papalpreet had initially evaded the police crackdown launched against Amritpal and his associates on March 18, 2023. He was eventually arrested from the Kathunangal area of Amritsar district on April 10, 2023, while Amritpal was arrested later that month.
The cases arising from the Ajnala police station incident included allegations of attempt to murder, assault on police personnel, obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties and promoting disharmony among different groups.
Papalpreet, who has been regarded as one of Amritpal Singh’s key advisers, has also worked as a freelance journalist and has been associated with Sikh activism. He had earlier faced a sedition case following the 2015 Sarbat Khalsa.
His candidature assumes political significance because Majitha has traditionally been the political stronghold of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. His wife, Ganieve Kaur Majithia, is the sitting MLA from the constituency.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party has already fielded Talbir Singh Gill, a former close aide and personal secretary of Bikram Singh Majithia, from the constituency.
Papalpreet also has a direct local connection with Majitha. A native of Marari Kalan village, which falls within the constituency, he has been involved in social and religious activities in the area. He has also been associated with initiatives against drug abuse and in promotion of sports.
His entry adds another significant contender to what is shaping up as a keenly watched electoral contest in Majitha ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
