The Aam Aadmi Party’s student wing, Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), on Thursday announced Adil Brar as its candidate for president in the upcoming Panjab University student elections.
AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand announced Brar’s candidature, citing his involvement in student activism and campaigns concerning students’ rights.
Meet Hayer said the AAP had consistently encouraged student participation in public life and political activism. He said young people were increasingly focusing on education and their future rather than divisions based on religion and caste.
“AAP has always encouraged student activism and participation in public life,” Hayer said, adding that the recent mobilisation of young people from different communities on education and future-related issues was significant.
Hayer said Brar had remained active in raising student concerns, including during the Senate protest. He also highlighted Brar’s election as the youngest Departmental Representative (DR) of the Law Department and expressed confidence that he would represent the concerns of Panjab University students.
Sukhanand said education had emerged as a major political issue and claimed ASAP candidates had consistently participated in student protests and raised campus-related concerns.
He described Brar as the most capable candidate for the presidential post, noting that Brar had previously served as a DR after securing the highest number of votes.
Sukhanand also pointed to several issues faced by students on the campus, including cleanliness and other basic concerns. Referring to the death of a student identified as Jyoti, he said the incident highlighted the need for greater accountability and sensitivity within the university system.
Brar said education and sports would be the two main pillars of his campaign.
“I thank the party leadership and ASAP for reposing their trust in me and giving me the responsibility of contesting the presidential election. Education and sports will be the two key pillars of my campaign. I will work to ensure that the genuine concerns of students are raised and addressed,” he said.
ASAP leaders said the organisation would continue to promote student activism and work towards improving the academic and sporting environment at Panjab University while taking up students’ genuine concerns.
