A major fire broke out at an electronics showroom in the busy Cantonment market of Ferozepur on Thursday afternoon, destroying a substantial quantity of electronic goods and causing preliminary losses estimated at lakhs of rupees.
The showroom, owned by Sanjeev Sachdeva, was occupied at the time of the incident. Sachdeva said he noticed smoke coming from the third floor and immediately went upstairs, where he found the floor engulfed in flames.
He said he sought assistance from other shopkeepers and they initially attempted to control the fire before the fire brigade was alerted.
Fire tenders from the Cantonment Board and Municipal Council reached the site around 30 minutes after receiving information about the blaze. Firefighters launched an intensive operation to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to adjoining parts of the building.
The intensity of the fire required the fire tenders to make several trips to replenish their water tanks during the operation. The blaze also attracted a large crowd, leading to considerable commotion in the busy market.
Cantonment police station SHO Sukhbir Singh said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined. He said firefighters were working to completely extinguish the blaze and the exact cause would be established after the operation.
Sachdeva said the showroom contained a large stock of electronic goods. He added that the precise extent of the financial loss could be assessed only after the fire was fully extinguished and the premises inspected. The preliminary assessment, however, indicated damage worth lakhs of rupees.
The incident has also revived memories of another major fire in the Cantonment area. On July 3, a restaurant caught fire in which one of its employees was charred to death.
