Chandigarh, August 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit has extended full support to the Punjab bandh called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha for August 21, backing its demand for the release of Bandi Singhs and opposing the alleged use of force against protesters.
In a joint statement, SAD Punar-Surjit General Secretary Gurpratap Singh Wadala, Senior Vice President Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Prem Singh Chandumajra and Youth Wing President Gurjit Singh Talwandi said their organisation would support the bandh and participate in efforts to make it successful.
The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, which has been staging a protest at the Chandigarh border seeking the release of Bandi Singhs, has called the shutdown to press for their release and protest the alleged use of force during the Morcha’s peaceful march on August 15. The Morcha has also opposed the registration of cases against its leaders.
The SAD Punar-Surjit leaders alleged that the government was not only refusing to release Bandi Singhs but was also attempting to suppress voices demanding their release through the use of force and registration of cases.
They appealed to people across Punjab who support the cause of justice to cooperate with the bandh on August 21 and “strongly oppose” what they described as government high-handedness.
The leaders said party workers and leaders would join the people during the bandh and seek to build pressure on the governments for the release of Bandi Singhs who, according to them, have completed their sentences but continue to remain incarcerated.
The statement was issued to the media by party Media In-charge Tajinder Singh Pannu.
