I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKG PTU), Kapurthala, organised a guest lecture on “World Photography Day: Exploring the Art of Visual Storytelling”, providing students with practical insights into photography, visual composition and professional media practices.
The programme was organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication to strengthen experiential learning and help students understand how photography can be used as a tool for storytelling in journalism and mass communication.
Professional photographer and photojournalist Karamveer Sandhu, who has more than three decades of experience in the field, was the resource person. He shared professional experiences and conducted an interactive session on the technical and creative aspects of photography.
University Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Yadwinder Singh Brar attended the programme as Chief Guest, while Registrar Dr. Navdeepak Sandhu was present as Guest of Honour. The Vice Chancellor congratulated Head of the Department Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh and the department faculty for organising the programme and appreciated its focus on practical learning.
Dr. Sandhu suggested that the initiative be expanded into a university-level programme next year, allowing students from different departments and campuses to interact with professionals from the media industry.
During the session, Sandhu explained the fundamentals of photography, including lighting, composition, framing, perspective and timing. He also discussed aspect ratios and their impact on the presentation and visual appeal of photographs across different platforms.
Using examples from his professional portfolio, he demonstrated how observation, anticipation and creative framing can turn ordinary moments into compelling visual narratives. Students also interacted with him and received guidance on selecting frames, maintaining visual balance and making effective use of available light.
A photography competition on “Nature, Emotion and Shadow” was also organised and judged by Sandhu. Around 60 students participated, including students from different states.
Rahul, an MA JMC first-semester student, won the Nature category; Abhinav, a BA JMC third-semester student, won the Shadow category; and Naveena, an MA JMC third-semester student, won the Emotion category.
The programme also featured a special video presentation, “Yaadein”, with voice-over by department alumnus Rajan Sahotra, a media personality associated with radio. The video was created by Abhinav.
Head of Department Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh and Dr. Ekta Mahajan, Assistant Professor, welcomed the dignitaries and resource person. Dr. Mahajan also delivered the vote of thanks.
Jiya, a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication student, anchored the programme. Faculty members Dr. Mangla Sahni, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Dr. Aabid Reza and H.K. Singh were also present and supported the event.
