Chandigarh, August 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit president Giani Harpreet Singh on Monday announced full support for the Punjab bandh call given by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha for August 21, urging people across the state to participate in the shutdown.
The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, which has been staging a protest at the Chandigarh border seeking the release of Bandi Singhs, has called the bandh over the continued incarceration of Sikh prisoners and alleged use of force during a march organised by the Morcha on August 15.
The Morcha has also objected to the registration of cases against its leaders following the protest.
Giani Harpreet Singh alleged that the government was not only refusing to release the Bandi Singhs but was also attempting to suppress voices demanding their freedom through the use of force and registration of cases.
Appealing to people across Punjab to support the bandh, he called upon justice-loving citizens to ensure a complete shutdown on August 21 and described the proposed action as a response to what he termed government high-handedness.
He said leaders and workers of his organisation would join the people and work towards making the bandh successful. According to him, the objective was to build pressure on the governments to secure the release of those prisoners who, despite completing their sentences, have continued to remain incarcerated for decades.
The statement was issued to the media by the organisation’s media in-charge, S. Tajinder Singh Pannu.
