Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia has condemned the attack on SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded, demanding a fast-track NIA investigation into the latest incident and the December 2024 attack on Badal at Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar.
Majithia said Badal had reached Delhi from Nanded along with his family after being discharged from hospital. He said Badal suffered a serious hand injury in the attack and underwent surgery, while the police personnel who intervened to stop the attacker was also injured.
Majithia said Badal’s survival was due to the blessings of Guru Sahib and quoted him as saying, “I was not afraid earlier, nor will I be afraid now.” He said the statement reflected Badal’s faith in Guru Sahib and his commitment to Punjab’s peace and Hindu-Sikh brotherhood.
Strongly objecting to violence inside a gurdwara, Majithia said such places are centres of peace, faith and security and that violence there could neither be accepted nor justified. He said political or ideological differences in a democracy should be addressed through elections and dialogue, “not a dagger or a bullet”.
Majithia also raised questions over the security arrangements surrounding Badal, particularly in view of the December 2024 attack at Sri Darbar Sahib. He questioned how an assailant was able to approach Badal despite his Z-plus security cover and whether security arrangements had been reviewed and strengthened after the earlier incident.
He also sought an investigation into any possible links between the two attacks, saying the circumstances warranted an immediate and comprehensive probe.
Majithia appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Maharashtra government to entrust both cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on a fast-track basis. He said the probe should examine not only the attackers but also their contacts, possible accomplices, funding, foreign or external links and any security lapses.
Calling violence against political opponents a serious threat to Punjab, Majithia said accepting a dagger as an instrument of political expression could create a dangerous precedent. “Those who justify violence want to turn Punjab into a jungle,” he said.
Majithia also referred to Amit Shah’s phone call to Harsimrat Kaur Badal after the Nanded attack to enquire about Sukhbir Badal’s health, saying it reflected the seriousness of the incident.
He said the matter went beyond Sukhbir Badal’s personal security and involved the sanctity and security of religious places, Punjab’s future and communal harmony. He stressed that the case should not end with the arrest of the attacker and that any wider conspiracy must also be exposed.
