Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Friday said the pain and trauma of the 1947 Partition could never be erased from the collective memory of Punjab and its people.
Dhillon led a silent march in Jalandhar from Bhagwan Sri Ram Chowk to Bhagwan Valmiki Chowk to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day and pay tribute to the lakhs of people who lost their lives or were forced to leave their homes during the Partition.
Addressing participants, Dhillon said India was divided into two countries in 1947, but Punjab and Punjabis bore one of the deepest wounds of the Partition. Punjab itself was split, while thousands of families were uprooted and forced to leave behind their homes, land, property and loved ones.
He said the experience had affected virtually every Punjabi family in some way and that the wounds of Partition remained part of Punjab’s collective memory.
“The pain of Partition is a wound inflicted on the heart of Bharat Mata that can never be forgotten,” Dhillon said.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with declaring August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, saying the observance had provided recognition to the countless victims and those who made sacrifices during the upheaval, whose suffering and contributions, he said, had not received adequate space in historical accounts for decades.
Dhillon stressed the need to educate younger generations about the human cost of Partition so that forces seeking to divide society would never again get an opportunity to gain ground.
He also pointed out that several historic gurdwaras and temples were left in Pakistan following Partition, leaving generations of devotees with a longstanding desire to visit and serve these religious sites.
Dhillon said the Narendra Modi-led government had addressed one such longstanding demand by constructing the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, enabling devotees from India to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.
Punjab BJP in-charge Narendra Raina, Manoranjan Kalia, Rakesh Rathore, district president Ashok Sareen Hicki, Sushil Rinku, Sheetal Angural and Karamjit Chaudhary were among those present during the silent march, along with a large number of BJP workers.
